I would hope we've reached a point in society where marriage is more of an economic trade deal. While I think it is wise that a certain level of financial sustainability has been reached by a couple before marriage (and this has less to do with class and more to do with stress), I don't think finances should be part of the equation in a marriage. You marry who you are compatible with, you don't decide to only marry wealthy people because you want to eat out at nice restaurants. That is so shallow and insulting to all the advances we've made as women.
Marry rich, marry poor, marry a financial equal...just don't marry for those reasons.
While I didn't marry "up", I have dated "up", and now will only date men who are of a higher economic and social status as myself. I have never before been so intellectually stimulated and challenged as I am when I am dating someone of a higher economic and social status.
Bonus point: He generally picks up the check!
