Ideas For Weekend Getaways?

Rome. Paris. Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. What is your idea for a great weekend getaway? What are some great getaways you've been on? And what is the most important factor in a getaway—company, location, cost?

I agree that cost is important. That's why sightseeing in your own town might be fun. Even getting away for a night at a bed and breakfast or a snazzy hotel can break the boredom cycle. It's really important to have things to look forward to.

I think it really depends on a) who you're going with and b) what you plan to do. Paris and Rome would've been terrible weekend getaways with my boyfriend, because we would've spent all our time (and money) attempting to sight-see in three days (which, by the way, is totally not possible) instead of relaxing. I went to Paris for the first time by myself, and to Rome for the first time with a couple of friends (actually, it was a class day-trip and we just...extended it to a weekend). Plus, I think the most interesting places in the US are pretty off-the-map.

That said, we go to Vegas a lot...because he knows it well and it's a convenient "half-way point" (yeah, right) between New York City (where I live) and San Francisco (where he lives).

But really, we could probably meet anywhere in between our two cities for three days and we'd both have a blast. ;)

I love getaways for local kitschy festivals. Like jazz festivals. Theater festivals. Or I once went to gumbo festival. YUM.

Best getaway I've ever been on was in Gaitlinberg TN. Cheesy and country, yes. But soo much fun. We hiked. White water rafted and ate a lot of bbq.

I used to say location, now I say cost because you can't relax when you know you are blowing a lot of money when you don't have enough and the economy is in trouble.

I really enjoyed a short camping trip we took just 2 hours away from our house. we saw the fall leaves. and we were roughing it because we ate out at all these cheap places. it was awesome.

company and cost. company because you can have fun wherever with the right people. cost because its no fun when your vacation makes you broke and miserable.

I spent a week with my family in Costa Rica recently. We avoided the tourist zones and stayed in a jungle eco-lodge. Nothing like the black sand beaches and lush rainforest to re-energize our relationships!

i live in nyc right now so this doesn't apply, but when i used to live in colorado and i had a car i loved just taking off and driving somewhere. it can be great to get in the car with someone and get on the highway and drive without a plan. listen to music, eat fast food and when you're tired of driving get off at an exit you haven't taken before and explore the town or field or where ever you are. it's really freeing--no plans, nothing to tie you down. and i always had this feeling that i could do anything, act any way i wanted, because i was in a place that i'ld probably never go again.

I'm such a homebody! I would suggest bunker down together and stay home for the weekend! Or trade places with friends in a different city and take a (weekend) walk in their shoes!

Its impossible to bunker down with my wife. She always wants to clean or do laundry. We have to get away.

Wow. I love this idea! I'm totally going to suggest this to some of my friends. I think activity-based getaways are always great. Skiing, attending a Trek convention, whatever floats your boat. Better than just touring around. Creates a new experience to reflect back on.

Research a town an hour or two away from yours that looks quaint/cool and book a room at a bed and breakfast in town. Make sure to try and find a scenic route and make a couple of good mix CD's for the ride.
