Managing Differences: My Spouse is a Slob

To clean or not to clean. Can messy and neat partners compromise?

What do you do if your significant other is a slob? How do you manage your differences? Catie Lazarus has some love and relationship issues and needs a therapist. She found the most experienced one out there...you! Watch "On the Couch" for all the public therapy you will ever need.

Can you relate?

Catie Lazarus, that is the woman who hosts On the Couch! These are very funny and helpful, can you have more of them? It is hard to locate Catie Lazarus's videos and On the Couch on the Tango website and I LOVE THEM!!! Please bring them back.

My (maz) hubbie has OCD and he has to have slop in every room. He drives me nuts. He does not clean. He will not eat anything I cook so he cooks and slop up. He can't be in any work for 5 mins unless it looks like a rubbish dump. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP! Tired of cleaning because it last 5 mins.

Thanks for all the comments! Question, do you think an incentive approach really works or is a "they'll get the picture" attitude more effective?

You knew your spouse was a slob before you married them!

Your 'incentive' or 'get the picture' approaches simply stir the pot (creating resentment) until the whole thing boils over. Then a blow up occurs and maybe things change in the short term, but too often the cycle repeats itself.

See, men, women actually love drama. They want to believe their life is played out like some novella. Rather than accepting someone's imperfections, they want a project they can mold and tinker with. Stupid.

i agree with the person who said clean up what you do but not your spouse's mess. They'll get the picture sooner or later.

The answer is simple: You LEAVE! Why create unnecessary drama playing games? You losers apparently have nothing better to do than to strategize against your so-called "significant other" with tit for tat nonsense.

Realize you can't change others. You can only change yourself. If you can not accept someone for who they are, then go find someone new.

There's are billions of people out there. Why should you have to compromise who you are?
