I'm not sure if this is a defense or a criticism of the husbands, but I think the main reason the hours spent on housework has gone down in the past thirty years is probably technology. My mom hung up the laundry and washed dishes by hand.
The other big factor is people eating out more and spending less time on cooking.
I wonder what effect owning a house has on all of the numbers for modern women. Single women and couples without kids are probably more likely to live in apartments.
