Facebook Group: I Need Sex

Reaching out to the student body in a whole new way.

Ah, Facebook, one of the most popular social networking tools on the web. Complete with the stalker's mini-feed to tell what your friends are up to and scores of boredom-battling applications, but 23-year old Laura Michaels sure found a new way to use it.

Ten minutes after she created "I Need Sex," the group already had 35 members and proceeded to gain the membership of a rough total of 100 men. Maneater Michaels ate up half the group by sleeping with 50 of the guys with the defense that "I was satisfying my own desires."

Although Facebook gave the group the boot, it's likely to make an interesting point of discussion for chastity clubs that preach abstinence. The co-president of Harvard's own believes sexual virginity is "not rooted in an image of innocence and purity, but rather in the notion of strength."

So, you decide: What better demonstrates the strength of a woman? The freedom of promiscuity? Or the ability to refrain? Let us know!

Can you relate?

Freedom of promiscuity or ability to refrain? Please, that's too biased of a way to look at the question. How about the freedom to engage in responsible intercourse as many times as you like? And since when does FB censor people advocating perfectly legal consensual intercourse? I guess people who really want to hop in the sack will find better ways anyway, like (e.g. http://www.pointsincase.com/columns/casey-freeman/facebook-of-sex). But this is a total double standard you've just bought in to.

Okay, so I'm a guy with only a one sided view, but I personally don't care for the double standard. In my early college days, hell, even in high school, I was thought to be a player because I dated a lot. No nookie in highschool, fair game in college, but I wasn't looking for notches on my belt. I have friends that to this day don't know me well enough to know that I wasn't trying to get into as many pants as I could, and I didn't lie or falsify anything to get into the pairs of pants that I did. It was just me being me.

Is a woman loose if she has slept with more men than she has digits to count them with? Not necessarily. For some people who are just very sexually charged but are also very responsible about it (no lies, cheating, playing around, etc.) it can just go that way sometimes. I love a woman with experience, because then it opens up the playing field to even more possibilities. This isn't to say that I haven't met women that have sex at the drop of a hat, or the female player.

This same thing goes for guys. Yes, it is almost a guarantee that if you ask a guy to sleep with you on a first date that he will...we're easy, and we are unabashedly aware that you are aware of this. You know which guys are players by the end of the first date and which ones aren't.

Media has some play in this, but the fundamental issue is where are these young women, and young men, learning these values from? I love sex. Like any guy its been on the top of my to do list since puberty hit. Doesn't mean that I don't value the woman that I'm getting it from. What these young girls are doing is showing the world how much they don't undestand what their real value is...and that may be because no one has ever really shown them that at home.

I am fine with the double standard. there are just some thing that should stay the same. Women shouldn't live a life of promiscuity. The problems is women want to be men so bad, but get mad when they can't find a man. Your a women relax!

As always, when a man sleeps with 50 women, it's all good, but when a woman does it, she's cheap.

Enough with the double standard.

It's the ability for anyone, woman OR man, to make that choice and not worry about what other people think. Sex, love, and lust are not particularly rational things, and as long as we are engaging in these activities with other responsible cognizant adults, then we don't really have to rationalize these behaviors. It is those people who feel compelled to defend themselves and stutter an explanation (out of a sense of discomfort with their own choices) that shows lack of strength.

Neither. The strongest woman is independent, yet loves her man. She is with him not because she NEEDS him, but because she WANTS him, and desires the intimacy of a close relationship. A strong young woman is neither virginal nor promiscuous. She is monogamous.

Promiscuity is always the easy way to go. As a species we are biologically hard wired to seeks out as many mates as possible to reproduce ourselves. The ability to refrain is a demonstration of ones strength because it is not natural. Thats what makes it so special.
