Remember 2006? Remember when everyone in America thought that soccer was pretty cool because the World Cup was being played? And that guy Zinedine Zidane nailed that Italian dude with a vicious headbutt? Those were good times. Anyway, one of the subplots of that tournament was the miraculous recovery of the UK team’s Wayne Rooney. He’d been injured in a Premiership (regular-season) game and was in danger of missing the Cup. He got better (some say with the help of an oxygen tent, which are said to give certain sexual powers), but was a non-factor in his team’s games.
Anyway, Rooney is a huge star in this sport of soccer. We’re not sure which American athlete he’s most like but we’ll say LeBron James, with his gritty play, his ability to make his teammates better, and his huge endorsements (including a roughly $10 million advance from HarperCollins for 5 books). So, this Rooney guy is paid a lot. And he’s getting married to Coleen McLoughlin in the south of France this summer at an estimated $6 million shindig according to the website Holy Moly. Not bad for a guy you’ve never heard of. That will move him into rare territory, check out this list from Forbes of the most expensive celebrity weddings ever (note: a few Indian scions, Arabian Sheikhs, and a Russian Oligarch did not make this list because they're not really celebrities but did have weddings in excess of $40 million):
1: David Gest and Liza Minnelli were married in 2002 for $3.5 million (they should get a refund).
2: Paul McCartney married Heather Mills in 2002 for $3 million (bad year or something).
3: Arun Nayar married Elizabeth Hurley in 2007 for $2.5 million (but earned all of it back or even a bit extra by selling the photos).
4: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married in 2006 for $2 million (no couches were hurt in the filming of this wedding).
5: Larry Fortensky married Elizabeth Taylor in 1991 for $2 million (and at Neverland Ranch, which is kiss of death).
6: Jordan Bratman and Christina Aguilera got hitched for $2 million in 2005 (best $2 million ever spent).
7: Elton John and David Furnish were married in 2005 for a cost of $1.5 million ("Hold me closer, tiny dancer!")
8: Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones were married in 2000 for $1.5 million (And they are never, ever getting a divorce, ever).
9: Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren were married in 2004 for $1.5 million (for shizzle).
10: Eddie Murphy married Nicole Mitchell for 1993 for $1.5 million (and nothings been the same since).
So according to this list, they will have the most expensive celebrity wedding ever (though it's possible some weddings didn't have enough public details to make the list). We’re expecting lots of velour and some fairly chav-ed out décor (possibly with Posh and Becks officiating).
