Egyptian Woman Seeks Legal Ruling On Text Divorce

According to a Fatwa (religious ruling) a while back, Islamic couples can be divorced by thrice emailing a divorce demand. And for the first time this law is being tested in Egypt. A woman, after failing to promptly return a call from her husband, received three divorce notifications via SMS from her husband. According to Islamic law (Sharia), a man does not need a court of law to get divorce. Only to declare his intent three times.

So, now it’s up to a Cairo family court to figure out if the divorce should hold up. As you may’ve noticed, we’re borderline obsessed about the notion of breaking up via text message. We’re very interested in how this plays out.
