Tango ranks the potential First Couples' relationships.
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts... but in a relationship, it's the parts that make a couple tick. That's why we compared the campaigning couples across different criteria on a scale of one to five. Here's a sneak peek at which union is best suited to a White House Stay.
Charisma: Are the compelling to the public?
Stability: How solid is their relationship?
Chemistry: Do they have a palpable romantic spark?
Visibility: Can they keep their political and personal scandals out of the headlines?
Synergy: Is the candidate's spouse a campaign asset or a liability?
BARACK OBAMA AND MICHELLE ROBINSON OBAMA
The youngest of the presidential contenders, the Obamas still have to prove that their marriage can stand up to the test of a grueling national campaign. But Michelle's good looks and Barack's star quality make them one of the most intriguing couples of the 2008 campaign.
JOHN MCCAIN AND CINDY HENSLEY MCCAIN
Both have baggage: John is divorced, and Cindy has overcome an addiction to painkillers. Their 18-year age difference once raise eyebrows. But to compensate, they are a faithful- and likable- team. Their adoption of a Bangladeshi orphan gives them diversity cred.
MITT ROMNEY AND ANN DAVIES ROMNEY
Though Mitt and Ann's relationship is rock-solid, Ann isn't well known outside Massachusetts. However, their classic love story adds to their image - although they will have to overcome bias against a Mormon family in the White House.
HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON AND BILL CLINTON
From Monica to Whitewater, the Clintons are hopeless at avoiding the tabloids. But their commitment to their marriage is admirable. Their strong public image stems from their individual personalities - from Bill's charisma to Hillary's resolve - rather than as their chemistry as a couple.
MIKE HUCKABEE and JANET HUCKABEE
Loyal and devoted, this couple has stood by one another through thick and thin, from cancer to obesity. This, combined with their love of adventure—Janet’s in particular—make them a well-rounded, grounded couple that isn’t afraid to take chances. We haven’t seen much affection, though, between the two, but that could easily be chalked up to their devout religious ties: he’s a Southern Baptist minister, she’s the dutiful preacher’s wife. Overall, Mike and Janet’s devotion to each other could make them the frontrunners.
