Republican Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, whose phone number was linked to Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the so-called "D.C. Madam," says that he is sorry for a "serious sin" and that he has already made peace with his wife.

Palfrey is awaiting trial on racketeering charges related to a prostitution ring she allegedly ran.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Vitter said Monday evening in a printed statement. "Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."

Tango’s Take
David Vitter was a rising star in the right-leaning part of the Republican Party. He was pro-life and against gay marriage. Despite this right-leaning, he actually came out in favor of Rudy Guiliani (who is fairly left-leaning, for a conservative). But the house of cards may come tumbling down after this revelation. The great thing about Vitter’s admission was that A) he beat the Palfrey list to the punch; B) he didn’t blame anyone but himself (no drugs or alcohol here, Mark Foley); C) he appears to have his family on board (‘listen, if my wife’s not that mad, then you guys can’t be either, okeedokee?’); and D) he’s gotten forgiveness from God, which is nice. It’s funny, they have a quote from his wife Wendy, who we assume is lovely, empathizing with Lorena Bobbitt rather than Hillary Clinton, “If he does something like that, I'm walking away with one thing, and it's not alimony, trust me.” We assume that she means his philandering genitals. That quote was from 1999, we were all a little more righteous back then.
